A COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY

We know that the unique experiences and points of view that individuals bring to the ideation, design, and implementation of technology make the world a better place for everyone. We celebrate and encourage these differences so that we may learn from one another as we improve our communities.

MISSION

Technovation[MN] inspires and empowers girls to build technology to make an impact on their community

TECHNICAL SKILLS

Multiple technical tracks enable girls to develop programming, data literacy, digital fluency, and problem-solving skills with an entrepreneurial mindset. Girls develop a comfort with technology that precedes any career choice they make.

“Technovation[MN] did not only prepare me to be a technologist, but any -ologist.”

Parkview Center, 7th Grade Middle School Student.

HUMAN SKILLS

The pandemic and social injustice has shown the continued importance of a technology future that must be designed and built by representatives of our communities. Teamwork and a focus on building technology to solve challenges in the community create the foundation for the human element of technology. The teams pitch their technology developing confidence and story-telling skills applicable to future career choice.

VISION

To change the demographic landscape in technology fields by fostering entrepreneurship in girls across Minnesota.

MINNESOTA

Minnesota ranks last among all states in high schools offering computer science according to code.org. In order to eliminate disparities in computer science education, equitable participation and experience for all students must grow in conjunction with access. Data shows that with as little as one hour of coding a week, students develop the confidence and skills to be become successful at building technology. Technology roles in Minnesota are showing an occupational gap through 2031. Technovation[MN] has given Minnesota girls the confidence to succeed in technology roles and our state needs them.

NATIONAL

Representation of women at all corporate levels decreased this year. The industry average for technical women in the workforce is 26% according to AnitaB.org 2021 Top Company report. One result of the pandemic is that women are leaving the workforce at a much higher rate in any year before. Technovation[MN]’s program is building strong networks early in a girl’s life to support and encourage a future in technology. “I hope in the future I will help develop technology that will continue to break down barriers and build connections between people from different countries, cultures and social classes.” - 10th Grade Highland Park High School, St Paul student.

TIEN'S STORY

As a child of Vietnam immigrant parents, Tien had to navigate an environment of mostly white classmates, culture differences, and discovery of purpose. Technovation[MN] gave her a focus but more importantly, a network of support and encouragement.

Researchers at Cornell University found that gender differences in high school students' occupational plans -- where they see themselves at age 30 -- have a large effect on gender equality in STEM outcomes in college. Among high school senior boys, 26% planned to enter STEM or biomed occupations, compared with 13% of girls.
